Length: 27 km
Enjoy a scenic bike ride through the hills of Pederstrup and the Skals River Valley. Visit Romanesque churches, ancient gravestones, and the Hvolris Iron Age Village..
Start at the campsite and turn left in Vammen on the paved road Hobrovej. Continue straight toward Viborg, crossing the Vammen junction. After about 5 km, turn right at the sign post “Løvel 5” (Iversvej). At the T-junction, turn right at the road sign “Løvel 3”. After approximately ½ km, continue straight at the sign post “Pederstrup 4” (Vråvej). On the right-hand side, ride through the hilly Pederstrup Bakker.
Once back on the flat plateau, stop at the sharp bend near house no. 28-30 – from here, you have a beautiful view over the Skals River Valley. At the T-junction, turn right at the sign post “Pederstrup 1”. Along the roadside, you can still see a row of old road markers. Keep right and follow the paved road to the church. Pederstrup Church is open for everyone. Step inside and have a peak at a typical Danish Romanesque church from around 1100-1200. Walk around the cemetery and enjoy the view over the valley and toward Rødsø. Along the stone wall, a number of very old gravestones are on display.
Return and keep right – follow Løvelbrovej. You are now cycling within the Skals River Valley itself. About 200 m before the main road, there is a small protected area on the left-hand side. It consists of remnants of sunken roads – all leading toward the old Løvel Bridge (crossing the Skals River). At the main road (13), turn right. At the bridge, look to the left – westward – to see the remains of the old bridge pillars.
After 1 km on the main road (number 13), turn right at the sign post “Hersom” and “Hvolris” (Drivvejen). On the right-hand side lies Bjerregrav’s small Romanesque church. At the T-junction, turn right at the sign post “Hvolrisområdet”, pass the school, and cross the bridge. Hvolris, located about 600 metres from the road, is Viborg Diocese Museum’s archaeological excavation site, with remains of Iron Age dwellings, paving, ovens, spring constructions, sunken huts, Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements. The permanent features from the excavations are marked in the area, while the artefacts found are collected in an exhibition.
Continue along the road and turn right at Teglgårdsvej, sign post “Vammen 7”. On the left-hand side you pass the concrete roof tiles factory Monier a/s Hersom-Værket, while the Skals River meanders to your right. In Hersom, turn right at the sign post “Vammen 4”, then keep right at the sign post “Vammen 3”, passing the church. Turn right again at the sign post “Vammen 3” and cross the Skals River Valley. In Vammen, turn left at the intersection by the corner shop. Turn right onto either Langsøvej or Bygmarksvej.
